Mahantesh meaning
Mahantesh (महांतेश) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit and Hindi origin (Kannada usage).
Lord of the mahants, great lord (mahant + īśa)
Also used to mean: great soul
Mahantesh (महांतेश) joins mahant and Sanskrit īśa. Platts gives mahant as an eminent person, the head of a religious order or monastery, and, as an adjective, "great"; Monier-Williams gives īśa as a lord or master and as a name of Shiva. The name therefore means "lord of the mahants" or simply "great lord". Neither dictionary lists the compound itself, and the "great soul" given on one list is a looser reading. The name is used mainly in northern Karnataka, in Lingayat families devoted to Shiva, and is often written Mahanthesh.
