Praneet (प्रणीत) is the Sanskrit praṇīta, from pra-nī, "to lead forward". Monier-Williams gives a range of senses: led forward and brought, especially of fire, water or soma carried to the altar; performed, made or prepared; and established, taught or written. Hindi still uses praṇīt for a work composed by an author. As a noun the word means fire consecrated with sacred formulas. Baby-name lists usually give "modest" or "humble"; we could not find that sense in the Sanskrit dictionaries, so it appears to be a modern meaning.
