Royal sage: a king who became a saint through austerity
Also used to mean: king among sages
Rajarshi (राजर्षि) is Sanskrit rāja-ṛṣi, "king-sage". Monier-Williams explains it as a ṛṣi of royal descent, a man of the warrior class who becomes holy through great austerity, and gives Purūravas and Viśvāmitra as examples; it ranks alongside devarṣi, a divine sage, and brahmarṣi, a priestly sage. King Janaka of Videha is the classic rajarshi of later tradition. The title was also given to modern reformers such as Shahu of Kolhapur. As a given name it is used in Bengal.
