Rumaisa is the name al-Rumayṣāʼ, borne by Umm Sulaym bint Milḥān, a woman companion of the Prophet Muhammad and the mother of his servant Anas ibn Mālik. In Lane's lexicon al-Rumayṣāʼ is another name for al-Ghumayṣāʼ, the star Procyon, so called because its light is small beside its brilliant neighbour Sirius. Many name sites say the star is Sirius; Lane's sources point to Procyon. The word is a diminutive from a root that, quite plainly, refers to matter gathering in the corner of the eye; the star name is its best-known use. Some sites give 'princess' or 'flower', which the dictionaries do not support.
