Sanghamitra meaning
Sanghamitra (संघमित्रा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin (Pali Saṅghamittā).
Friend of the Saṅgha (the community of monks)
Also used to mean: friend of the community, friend of the sangha
Sanghamitra (संघमित्रा) joins Sanskrit saṃgha and mitra. Monier-Williams gives saṃgha as any multitude or community, and especially the brotherhood of Buddhist monks, and mitra as a friend or companion, so the name means "friend of the community". Its famous bearer is Saṅghamittā (the Pali form), daughter of the emperor Aśoka, who became a nun and, according to Sri Lankan tradition, carried a sapling of the Bodhi tree to Anuradhapura in the 3rd century BCE and founded the order of nuns there. The name is used today mainly in Bengal and Odisha.
