Sanskriti (संस्कृति) is the Sanskrit word saṃskṛti, from saṃ- and kṛ, "to make", the same verb that gives saṃskṛta, the Sanskrit language, literally "refined, perfected". Monier-Williams gives saṃskṛti as making ready, preparation and perfection, formation, hallowing or consecration, and determination or effort. In modern Hindi and other Indian languages the word has come to mean culture or civilisation, and name lists give Sanskriti as "culture" or "tradition". That is a modern sense rather than one found in the old dictionaries, though it grows naturally out of the idea of refinement. Marathi families often write it Sanskruti.
