Shashikala meaning
Shashikala (शशिकला) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin.
A digit of the moon; the moon in general
Also used to mean: crescent moon
Shashikala (शशिकला) joins Sanskrit śaśin, "the moon", literally "the one marked with a hare" after the figure Indians see on its face, and kalā, one of the sixteen digits or phases of the moon. Monier-Williams gives śaśikalā as a digit of the moon or the moon in general, the name of a metre, and the name of various women in the story literature. The crescent moon that Śiva wears in his hair is often described with words like this. Name lists give "digit of the moon" or "crescent moon", the dictionary meaning. The name is often shortened to Shashi, and in South India it is spelled Sashikala.
