Tamal meaning
Tamal (तमाल) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin (Bengali usage).
The tamala tree, dark-barked but white-blossomed; a forehead mark
Also used to mean: dark tree, tree associated with Krishna
Tamal (तमाल) is the Sanskrit tamāla, a tree that Monier-Williams describes as having a very dark bark but white blossoms; it is mentioned in the Mahābhārata and the Rāmāyaṇa, and the word could also mean a forehead mark made from its juice. In Vaiṣṇava poetry the dark tamāla groves of Vrindavan are part of Kṛṣṇa's landscape, and the tree's deep colour is likened to his, which is why name lists give Tamal as "dark tree" or "tree associated with Krishna". Botanists still debate which species the tamāla was. The name is used mainly in Bengal, where it is pronounced and sometimes written Tomal.
