Bhagirathi meaning
Bhagirathi (भागीरथी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, भा, it is a Dhanu rashi name (Mula nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The Ganges, or its great western headstream
Also used to mean: ganga
Bhagirathi (भागीरथी) means "belonging to Bhagiratha". In the Ramayana and the Puranas, King Bhagiratha performed long penance so that the heavenly river Ganga would descend and purify the ashes of his ancestors, and the river took his name. Monier-Williams gives bhāgīrathī as a name of the Ganges, or of its great western branch. On the map today the Bhagirathi is the headstream that rises at Gaumukh and meets the Alaknanda at Devprayag, where the two become the Ganga. Name lists give the name simply as "Ganga".
