Musab (مصعب) is the Arabic muṣʿab, from ṣaʿuba, "to be hard, difficult". Lane's lexicon defines it as a stallion camel left unridden and untouched by a rope, so that it grows untamed, and, applied to a man, one made a chief or lord. Name lists usually give the meaning as "strong" or "capable", and sometimes "chief"; only the last is close to Lane's wording. The name is honoured through Musʿab ibn ʿUmayr, an early companion of the Prophet who was sent to teach Islam in Medina and fell at the Battle of Uhud.
