Arafat meaning
Arafat (عرفات) is a Muslim boy's name of Arabic origin.
ʿArafāt, the plain near Mecca where Hajj pilgrims stand
Arafat (عرفات) is the name of the plain, with its hill, east of Mecca where pilgrims stand in prayer on the ninth day of the month of pilgrimage, the high point of the Hajj. The Quran names it in its rules for the pilgrimage (2:198). The word comes from the root ʿ-r-f, "to know, to recognise", and Lane's lexicon records several traditional explanations: that Adam and Eve recognised each other there after leaving paradise, or that Abraham told Gabriel "I have known" when shown the rites. It is used as a boy's name in India and Bangladesh.
