Nazneen is the South Asian spelling of Persian nāzanīn, built on nāz, a word Steingass glosses as grace, delicacy and softness, and also the playful pride or coquetry of lovers. Steingass defines nāzanīn as delicate, elegant, delightful and pleasing, and of a person as amiable or beloved; zani nāzanīn is 'a sweetheart', and maḥbūbi nāzanīn 'a beloved'. The same word is used in Iran as the name Nazanin. Baby-name lists give Nazneen as 'beloved', 'sweetheart' or 'beautiful', which matches the dictionary. In India and Pakistan it is a girl's name, also spelt Naznin.
