Noorain is written نورین, the dual form of Arabic nūr, 'light', so in Arabic it means 'two lights'. Lane's lexicon defines nūr as light of whatever kind, the opposite of darkness, and notes its use in the Quran, as in the Verse of Light (24:35), where God is called the light of the heavens and the earth. The dual is familiar from Dhū al-Nūrayn, 'possessor of the two lights', a title of the third caliph, ʿUthmān. On baby-name lists Noorain is usually explained as 'light of the eyes', as if it joined nūr with ʿayn, 'eye'; that meaning belongs to the separate name Noor-ul-Ain, and appears to be a popular reading of this one. The name is used for girls in India and Pakistan.
