The moon (literally 'having a hare'); a man's name
Shashi (शशि) is Sanskrit śaśin, "having a hare", one of the oldest Indian names for the moon, from the hare that tradition sees on its face. Monier-Williams gives the moon, the number one, camphor, a metre and a man's name; the feminine śaśinī is the eighth digit of the moon. The word also forms names such as Shashikant and Shashidhar.
