Devika meaning
Devika (देविका) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, दे, it is a Meen rashi name (Revati nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
A minor goddess
Also used to mean: little goddess
Devika (देविका) is Sanskrit devikā, built on devī, "goddess". In the Vedic Brāhmaṇas it names a class of lesser goddesses, and in the Taittirīya Saṃhitā the oblations offered to them, among them Anumatī, Rākā, Sinīvālī and Kuhū. Monier-Williams also records Devikā as a wife of Yudhiṣṭhira and mother of Yaudheya in the Mahābhārata, and as the name of a river. Name lists today give "little goddess", reading the ending -ikā as a diminutive, which is a fair everyday rendering of "minor goddess". The best-known modern bearer is Devika Rani, a pioneering star of 1930s Indian cinema who worked at Bombay Talkies, the studio co-founded by her husband Himanshu Rai.
