Restraint, self-control of the senses; concentration of mind
Also used to mean: patience
Sanyam (संयम) is Sanskrit saṃyama, from sam-yam, "to hold together, restrain". Monier-Williams gives restraint or control, above all self-control of the senses as taught in Manu and the Mahābhārata, and in the Yoga Sūtras the combined practice of concentration, meditation and absorption, dhāraṇā, dhyāna and samādhi. In Hindi sanyam means self-restraint and patience, and name lists give Sanyam as "patience" or "self-control", in line with the dictionary.
