Varghese meaning
Varghese is a Christian boy's name of Malayalam origin (from Syriac and Greek).
A land-worker, farmer (Greek georgos, root of George)
Also used to mean: tiller of the soil
Varghese is the Kerala form of George, used by the Saint Thomas Christians. It came through Syriac Giwargis, which became Geevarghese in Malayalam and was shortened to Varghese, with Varkey as a homely form. George goes back to Greek georgos, which Strong's Concordance builds from ge, 'earth', and ergon, 'work', and defines as a land-worker or farmer. St George, the soldier-martyr, is hugely popular in Kerala, where Geevarghese Sahada is honoured at many churches. Famous bearers include Verghese Kurien, the 'Milkman of India' behind the White Revolution, and St Geevarghese Mar Gregorios of Parumala.
