Vasav (वासव) is the Sanskrit vāsava, formed from vasu. Monier-Williams gives it as relating to or descended from the Vasus, the eight Vedic gods of light and the elements, and as a masculine noun a name of Indra, their chief, used throughout the Mahābhārata and classical poetry. It is also a name for the lunar mansion Dhaniṣṭhā, which the Vasus preside over. The feminine vāsavī is Satyavatī, the mother of the sage Vyāsa, so called as the daughter of King Vasu. Name lists give Vasav as "Lord Indra", matching the dictionary. Vasavi is a girls' name used in Andhra Pradesh.
