Ashok meaning
Ashok (अशोक) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, अ, it is a Mesh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Without sorrow; the ashoka tree; Emperor Ashoka
Ashok (अशोक) is the Sanskrit a-śoka, "without sorrow", from the negative a- and śoka, "sorrow". Monier-Williams gives it as not causing sorrow or not feeling sorrow, and as the name of the aśoka tree, a moderate-sized tree with striking red flowers that is common in classical poetry. The dictionary also records Aśoka as a minister of King Daśaratha in the Rāmāyaṇa and as the well-known king of Pāṭaliputra: the Maurya emperor Ashoka, who ruled about 269–232 BCE and became a great patron of Buddhism. Indian name lists give Ashok as "without sorrow", which matches the dictionary. Ashoke and Asok are other spellings of the same name.
