Basit meaning
Basit (باسط) is a Muslim boy's name of Arabic origin.
One who spreads out or extends; al-Bāsiṭ, God who makes provision ample
Also used to mean: one who extends, generous
Basit (باسط) is the Arabic active participle of basaṭa, "to spread out, extend". Lane's lexicon explains al-Bāsiṭ as a name of God: the One who makes the means of living ample and plentiful for whom He wills, out of His liberality and mercy. That is why the compound Abdul Basit, "servant of the Expander", is also used, as with the Egyptian Quran reciter Abdul Basit Abdus Samad. Name lists give "one who extends" or "generous", glosses that follow from this sense. Steingass records the word in Persian as one who spreads abroad, and as a name of God.
