Pramila (प्रमीला) is best known as the name of a legendary queen. Monier-Williams lists pramīlā as the sovereign of a kingdom of women, and later retellings of the Mahabharata's horse-sacrifice story tell how this warrior queen fought Arjuna and then married him. As an ordinary noun the word comes from pra-mīl, "to close the eyes", and means lassitude or the drowsy exhaustion of fatigue. Name lists give "Arjuna's wife" and sometimes "wise", which is not a dictionary sense. Prameela is the usual South Indian spelling.
